The Third House
Danbury, Essex

Our clients had lived in Switzerland for a number of years and couldn’t believe when they returned to their family home in the UK, that they were colder here than there! Their mid-century home was in need of a fabric upgrade and rationalisation, so they could enjoy it during their retirement years.
Overview
The key to why the house was performing so poorly, was the cold bridging/lack of insulation and large expanses of low performing glazing, plus antiquated heating. For us, the house was incredible, ahead of its time when built but now requiring a ‘spruce up’.
As part of our rationalisation of the space, we upgraded the existing staircase to allow for more light and better use of internal space to the first floor.
The upgrades to the insulation is in two halves; the rendered wing is over-clad with Vandersanden linear bricks, whilst the second wing is insulated on the inside to retain the existing brickwork detail.
Rooms to the south side of the house were opened up to create a new super space for a more practical and enjoyable kitchen/dining/snug, with vaulted ceiling and roof light to bring sunlight directly into the centre of the kitchen, which also benefits from new pivot glazed doors.
Whilst the actual extension is small, this project is far more than that, it’s a whole house reinvention to 2025 modern standards. We’re looking forward to seeing it finished later this year.
