Ludgate Barn
Newgate St, Hertfordshire

Overview
The existing arched form of the redundant barn was the catalyst of our design and with exploration of the plans we ensured a designed ebb and flow of the internal layout with real effect.
Each space created for maximum view or connection to the beautiful countryside. The glazed gable of the main bedroom suite casts its gaze directly towards the woodland vista beyond.
The plans proposed within Green Belt planning policy as then (2017), the 2 protruding rectangular volumes were pushed out of the longitudinal walls of the main arched form in replacement of the stables, creating the living spaces to the ground floor. Atop providing a unique upper terrace from the bedrooms to unwind or enjoy a morning coffee as the sun rises in the East.
The materiality chosen worked both with the arched architecture and the natural back drop. The vaulted barrel rood was heavily detailed to ‘hide’ the gutter collecting the rainwater – creating a linear profile to the roofs wider side. Large glazed panels have been located to take advantage of solar gain as well as creating a light filled home - a stunning composition of detail, functionality and design combined.
A master class of planning and creative design.
- Barrel vaulted roof structure – bridge building engineering
- Rheinzink standing seam roof – emulating a corrugated rhythm synonymous on agricultural hay barns
- Charred timber cladding
- 2 storey guillotine wall, clad in stone striking through the double height entranceway and housing the feature staircase
- Air Source Heat Pump for heating and hot water
- Part of a wider scheme with Grangewood Stables for show horses.
“Sometimes a concept comes from just a view - this project was just that, the client had the perfect viewpoint but needed our imagination and flair to turn the old barn and stables into something truly special” Melanie Clear, Founder
