Green Belt Ingenuity
A Net Zero home set within the topography of the land forming our first subterranean architecture. The client's brief for this Green Belt new build was to be as sustainable as possible. The project’s site is set close to the family home and animal sanctuary that they have lived in for almost twenty years.
Overview
A previous working yard, the steepness of the slope facing the countryside was the 'ideas moment' to limit the impact to the Green Belt and make the most of the views, even creating an innovative earth energy bank.
The house only has one glazed side exposed, behind which are the key living spaces and main bedrooms. It has been designed to feel light, airy, and connected to its surrounding natural landscape. The drama unfolds as you walk through the front door and are instantly hit by the full height wall-to-wall glazed façade, which connects with each main space. This includes the master bedroom’s en-suite through an internal glass screen - so one can soak in the bath and soak up the views! The second bedroom openings face into a hidden courtyard.
This project follows a fabric first approach, with earth as the insulator, the orientation, thermal modelling, reclaimed-concrete thermal mass, geothermal earth bank and solar PV panel array, located on the car port for maximum efficiency - results in a Net Zero performance.
Such innovation is not always understood at local level hence taking the scheme to the Planning Inspectorate
- Positive impact to the site as a development resulting in net carbon dioxide emissions to zero through its design
- Rainwater harvesting for recycling of water
- Minimal thermal bridging - close coordination between ourselves, energy specialist and structural engineer
- Courtyard to allow for natural cross ventilation avoiding overheating in the summer months/creating a buffer zone for heat collection in the winter.
- Sustainable concrete structure acting as thermal mass and aesthetic
