Restoration and Reimagination of an Old Farm Complex in the Hertfordshire Green Belt

Clear Architects has submitted a detailed planning application to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council for the sustainable Conversion and Redevelopment of Ponsbourne Barns in Newgate Street Village, Hertfordshire.

The planning application, which is on Green Belt land, outlines plans to transform the current unused site into 34 strikingly different homes and an important community hub. The project will be built by our client Comer Homes.  The considered proposal has sustainability and community at its core, repurposing some of the existing barns and intertwining new properties within and with the existing historic walled garden and orchard.

The scheme exudes the highest credentials, being operationally Net Zero and an outstanding 18% Biodiversity Net Gain (well over the 10% required in the 2023 Environment Bill). The local population will benefit from a new sport facility, additional classroom facilities at the local village primary school, a new access road, and a community shop.

“This historical site needed a new purpose. Park Farm (as it was) was an opportunity to bring back to life redundant farm buildings and a walled garden with a new vision. Newgate Street village is a beautiful location and we felt very strongly that we wanted to create spaces and facilities that benefited all, from new villagers to existing residents. This is an exciting proposal, and we hope to see this under construction in 2023.”  Melanie Clear
