What We Did
We set out to design the conversion to maximise modern living in the new space, while retaining the plethora of original period features.
This complete refurbishment included the creation of a new kitchen-diner, four bedrooms, a bathroom (that innovatively utilises an original stained glass feature in the shower) and an ensuite to the master bedroom. A contemporary extension was added that relates to the original building, with rendered reveals to the windows.
Being within a Conservation Area, the extension had to be of a sensitive design to achieve planning consent, whilst still referencing the contemporary detailing of original features; like the rendered reveals. The carefully selected brickwork is separated by glass and render panels to avoid the clash of metric and imperial brickwork.

Stanstead Road Design Features
- A retained original stained glass window feature was incorporated into the shower design of the new bathroom
- Existing period details have been retained and enhanced
- Victorian black and white tiled entrance hall brought forward
- Out of place aluminium windows replaced with timber sash alternatives
- Floor replaced with a beautiful parquet wooden covering
- We looked beyond typical methods, such as tiling, and specified back painted glass in the bathroom instead
- Polished concrete flooring has been utilised across kitchen-diner area and out to the terrace, creating a seamless finish between inside and out
- A stunning ‘up and over’ glazing strip has been incorporated. This contemporary detailing cleverly separates the new extension with the original Victorian house, and provides another unique feature in the bathroom
